Why do we need this application

Currently, Shopify doesn't allow you to add a canonical tag from their admin panel and we know how important that is when working with SEO.

You create a collection of products that use the same content. Google crawler is going to flag it. To avoid this, the canonical tag allows telling the crawler that they all belong to the same URL (maybe your collection page).

How to use it

  1. Install the app
  2. The first time you open the app, it will ask you to update your theme to add a block.
  3. Click on "Update Theme". This will take you to your store theme settings with the app block enabled. Save the theme on the opened page.
  4. Refresh the app
  5. Choose a product you want to add a canonical tag for.
  6. Add the URL and save.
  7. You can check your product page to have an updated canonical tag (You can use online canonical URL checkers)

Having troubles

Don't see changes after theme update?

Shopify ends up removing app block when upgrading some themes. Don't worry, your data will persist since app doesn't save anything data outside, it's all in your Shopify data, safe. To make it work after upgrade, reinstall the app.

How to reset?

To remove canonical tag from some products, set the actual product URL as canonical tag in the app. That's what default value in Shopify is for canonical tag, your product URL.

To remove all product changes? Just uninstall the app. Drop us a feedback email what we're missing.

    First of all these both reviews are fake, Let me tell you what this plugin does to your website. When you add canonical through this it will add an additional canonical tag with their plugin name which will cause conflicts with your current canonical tag. Also i am facing cart and variation issues after adding this plugin and I had to remove it immediately.

    Sorry to hear that. Please check your email.
    We can clarify two points here:
    1. We don't interact with the cart actions. This must be coming from something else.
    2. Yes it adds another meta tag, since Shopify doesn't give access to update the canonical tag even through APIs. But this won't be a problem because google crawlers look for the last meta tag. Some tool might show warning for meta tag conflicts, but google crawlers don't care about it.

    FINALLY! I've been needing a canonical tool on Shopify to manually add a canonical tag to certain products. This app was easy to install and works like a charm. Manually adding a canonical tag via HTML is pretty easy, if you know how to and are confident in your abilities. This app allows anyone to properly canonical a product that has identical or similar content to another product, passing SEO authority to the product page of their choosing. The only thing I wish it did was allows me to input the URL I want to add the canonical tag to, rather than only selecting from the products.

    We didn't find a simple solution to have canonical tags support. We made our own solution which our team thought of publishing it as an app. So far it serves the purpose.
