About Image Sitemap

How much money are you losing on image search?

Many Shopify stores are missing large parts of their catalog imagery in Google Images — often more than 60%.

Image Sitemap is the first Shopify App that automatically builds, submits to Google Search Console, verifies, monitors, and updates a fully compliant .xml Google Image Sitemap for all images associated with each product, blog article and page in your Shopify store — all in real-time.

Image Sitemap is also the only app to provide full reporting for your indexed images.

  • Submit 100% of Your Product and Blog Images For Indexing
  • 100% Automated
  • Sitemap Updated & Re-Submitted In Real-Time*
  • Real-Time Monitoring of Google Index Performance

*If you update any product content or attributes in your catalog (like images, image ALT tags, product descriptions, variants, colors, sizes, SKUs, etc), we rebuild and resubmit your Image Sitemap to Google immediately in real-time. We declare EVERY image, regardless of how many variants you have per product. So if you have 500 products, with 20 images per product. We submit 10,000 images to Google for you.

Important Concepts

What is an image sitemap?

An image sitemap is similar in format to a normal sitemap.xml, except that it specifies images only. Most people don't know that search engines need an additional sitemap to help find images. The internet is just too big to find everything all the time.

Do I need one?

Yes. While Shopify provides an abbreviated image sitemap with only a single image per product, you need a much more comprehensive document. Our image sitemap includes ALL of your important images and is packed with additional metadata. For example, where Shopify might generate 1,000 lines of XML for you, our image sitemap will be something like 10,000 lines.

Metadata

We load your image captions with all available product variant metadata, like sku, weight, color, size, description, etc. It is essential to provide this contextual information to Google to enable more powerful and relevant searches.

Reporting

Image Sitemap is the first Shopify App to provide full reporting for your indexed images. We also identify potential 'Blackout' products — or products that seem to have no indexed images at all.

How big is an image sitemap?

Image sitemap files can be huge. To give an example, if your site has 3,000 product images, your .xml image sitemap could be more than 20,000 lines of code and more than 2.5MB in file size. Can you imagine editing that file manually, multiple times per day, and re-submitting it to Google by hand?

This App is wonderful, it really does work, you have to be patient because it takes some time. I have around 1500 items on my Shopify store : VintageArtReprints.com, Google already indexed almost 1200. William at Support is the best, he does respond very fast. I highly recommand this App !!

After 4 month 22 out of 450 images was indexed!! Really make sure your images are index when using this app. A total ripoff.

Regarding the suppliers try to find excuses to why the app didn’t work.

“ This customer installed my app across several international sites that were all submitting identical duplicate image content to Google.”

This is totally wrong!
We have to languages and and a modern app should be able to handle.

The images look the same but all file names has been changed the correct way according to Googles guidelines.

So if they find a bug or not is not important. 22 out of 450 images was index during 4 months!!
Also, We use Shopify and an Shopify approved theme. If the app can’t handle Shopify approved themes I guess they need to bring it up with them!

This customer installed my app across several international sites that were all submitting identical duplicate image content to Google. I spent a great deal of time communicating and researching what their potential issues might be and suggesting solutions. For example, not using javascript redirects by default on their most trafficked international domain, proper use of html lang tags, etc.

It is unfortunate that I also found an issue where Google's API will not return accurate data for url's using the special ö character. The customer was notified and proactively offered a refund. The customer then re-installed the app on the same domain with the special characters some five months later with the same expectations. The customer was proactively offered a refund on BOTH occasions.

Sorry it didn't work out, but the final message was the same — regardless of my app's inability to pull accurate data for the edge case of using a URL with a special character, the customer was doing things that could be harmful to their SEO, and that they should consult with an SEO expert to try to work through the issues and validate their progress manually.

SEO is a marathon, not a sprint. Regardless of the issue with the special character (which is ultimately my fault for not catching the issue sooner), my app is not a panacea for greater structural SEO issues.
