If you are tired of managing all the spam on your blog comments this app is for you. Installation is simple and you get three things:

  • reCAPTCHA v3 on comment forms
  • reCAPTCHA v3 on contact and login forms
  • proper spam flagging

Why reCAPTCHA v3

reCAPTCHA verifies that whoever is completing a form is not a spammer or a bot. The typical forms that are affected by spam are comment and newsletter signup forms. reCAPTCHA has historically required users to click a checkbox or a selection of images, much to their frustration. Version 3 is invisible to the user and happens in the background. The catch is that it is more complex to implement. This app easily does this for you.

While Shopify already protects most forms with the interactive image version of reCAPTCHA, the comments form is unfortunately exposed. reCAPTCHA can minimise comments you receive from spammers and simple bots.

Spam flagging

Shopify already does a good job at flagging spam posts but unfortunately there is still a lot of imprecision. The reason is that advanced bot circumvent the comment form completely so even using reCAPTCHA spam still goes through. This application flags any comments that were not posted regularly through the comment form as spam.

How to manage blog comments

  1. Set your shop to require comment approval
  2. In the manage comments section save a filter to only show comments that need approval
  3. With spambuster installed you can just ignore the comments marked as spam, no need to waste time deleting them

If you have a blog on Shopify then you will know how poor the spam filtering is, this is the only app that I have found that sorts the problem. I've been using it for several weeks now and it works perfectly, impressed!

Installed this app, which just took a moment. It works perfectly to get rid of the 100's of daily spam comments (often a series of 6-9 random characters, or viagra etc links) without us having to manually select 20 at a time in Shopify and delete or mark as spam. Saves a ton of time. Highly recommended. Their support is also great, they provided some custom CSS for me to dial in the formatting perfectly for our website.

This app may have worked at one point but it marks all comments, even legitimate ones, as spam. Also, even though it marks everything as spam it does not delete them. Nice idea but kind of poor execution. It does not save our company any time and does not solve the continued spam problem that has been ongoing with the Shopify blog comments.

Hi Body Aware, there was a bug causing the latest inserted comment to be marked as spam. It was happening in the case of no new comments being made between the spam checks. This has been fixed now.

To summarise your concerns:

1. this app does not delete spam comments because Shopify spam is never a 100% certainty, even if we get very close with this idea. It is best to let Shopify deal with the actual spam deletion. We can consider adding an optional setting that allows deleting the comments marked as spam, please let us know if there is interest.

2. the way to save time is to create a comment filter in your Shopify Admin that only shows you comments that need approval. Please reach out if you would like assistance on how to do this.
