My experience has been horrible! They DO NOT EVER ANSWER THEIR SUPPORT! Taking suggestions for another tax app! Your app does not work within Shopify parameters.

The worst customer service and support team. They take forever to respond to your email to the point that you are late for filing and then charge you $600 for backfiling fee. The agent Tobias G from Avalara Support is EXTREMELY rude on the phone. Stay away from this company!

It is difficult to give them the title of worst customer service ever, but they earned it. I tried for over 6 weeks to get them to cancel my service and refund me my money only to find out in the fine print that they signed me up for a year and that I have to pay for this extremely bad service from now until July 2024.
They only thing they automate is your state taxes, the local taxes YOU must do all the leg work yourself which includes a ton of setup in their system every month (or at least every month a new account is needed) them neglecting to tell me this and in fact straight up LIED to me by their salesman caused me to have to pay over $600 in penalities for local taxes. I asked them multiple times, "Will you do the work to pay the local taxes (all the cities and counties) or will I continue to have to manage that?" Their answer, we will take care of everything. BIG FAT LIE!
Stay as far from this company as you can. They might be ok for other things, but in my experience with Shopify it has been horrible. I reached out for over 6 weeks trying to reach someone. I submitted support cases and on their website it says "The support case is being managed by email." There was nothing on the website I could click on. They ignored my repeated emails, including new support cases. I was unable to reach anyone by phone. Very, very bad service. You should have to refund my money just for lying to me and not being up front about an annual contract - that was never mentioned.

The bad reviews are true. Click off this app and find something else to do your taxes.
I saw mixed reviews on this company but decided to take a chance because what they promise seems so convenient. To have a service handle taxes and returns for you seems like a lifesaver as small business owner. Unfortunately I was wrong and all this company has done is waste my time and money with nothing to show for it. Don't make the same mistake, go anywhere else but here for your tax filing software.
I'm not one to leave reviews, in fact this is the first one I've ever left for a company I've worked with but I felt like I should warn people about how terrible my experience has been.
Its with no exaggeration that I can say this has ben absolutely the worst company I've ever worked with. Implementation took months to complete. They provide no support. They will not answer any emails or support cases. You will be doing a massive amount of the work on set up yourself. It would have honestly been easier to just handle sales tax return filing myself. Their implementation consultants are based in India and you can only get a call with them from 2AM - 8AM Central Time. They won't understand anything you tell them and they definitely will not be able to solve your problems. Support will ignore any emails you send.
To ad insult to injury their payment system prompts you to enter your card numbers and information into a plain text document. I was hesitant to do this as it did not seem secure but did it anyway assuming it was safe. 2 days later my card was compromised and fraudulent charges started showing up. Its the first time that has ever happened to me. Coincidence or lack of security? You decide, but I know I wont be giving them my info again.
Do not under any circumstances use this company unless you'd like to have headache after headache and regret it like I do.

First of all, I'm not a member of shopify plus, but if only members of shopify plus can use it, then why do you appear in the application market for a fee? We installed the application, why can't we log in? Why is your service so bad that you ignore it by sending emails? Why?

DO NOT USE. Avalara's integration with Shopify simply does not handle customer returns (which means you will not get credit back for the sales tax collected). Avalara says this is known limitation of the integration with Shopify and acknowledges that they cannot calculate sales tax accurately if you have a customer return something to your store for a refund (which is virtually every merchant that uses Shopify).

Thank you for getting in touch with us. This app is for filing automated sales tax returns and is a separate product from our AvaTax integration for Shopify Plus which handles Sales Tax Calculation. The functionality you are referring to is for calculating sales tax on product returns with AvaTax for Shopify Plus and is not related to this app that handles tax returns. Our Shopify Plus integration does handle product returns, just not partial returns which are noted here as a known limitation. We are committed to making sure you have what you need.

Our Shopify integration connection on the Avalara side apparently stopped working and we did not catch it. This resulted in Avalara filing $0.00 returns with States. Once we caught the error, we had to manually file amended returns and remit - Avalara has no way to create amended returns even though the data is there (once we reconnected Shopify and imported for the time gap). Unless you're willing to babysit this app, just use Shopify Tax to generate state reports and manually file and remit on your own.

This review is an Avalara review as much as a review of this specific app. Shameful that their previous app, with all the documented negative reviews, have been removed in favor of this new/fresh app with no reviews. The company behind this app is a pitiful company. The service is atrocious. Unprofessional and disinterested. Cost us time & money to cancel with them and locate a newer/more professional company for our sales tax needs. I could never recommend this company, nor would many of those who have previously left reviews in the shopify app store for this company. Make sure to read the BBB reviews and complaints before taking a flyer on this company. Also, make sure to review the SST website for other similar providers. Anyone reading this review is welcome to contact us directly for additional details on our experience with avalara and the company we have chosen to replace them.
