Must admit I am very disappointed of the app and service. Totally useless. The updates never go smoothly, it's deleting all my theme customizations (which I payed a lot for) and I can't use the updated theme. Most important files need to be configured manually, and I have to hire a developer to make the changes, for extra payment ($300 to be exact). It is ridiculous as a pay you each month for this app.

The Theme Updater does identify customizations that it cannot carry over from your 2021 theme version so you can manually carry them over to your updated 2025 theme version.
Customizing the theme to be right-to-left and adding third party app code and customizations does introduce a lot of additional complexity. However, our support team has been helping you with each of your questions as they come up and please let us know if there is any additional help you may need by replying to your open ticket so we can do our best to help out.

I am not impressed.
We received a Digital Millennium Copyright Act takedown notice from a theme developer claiming that your Shopify store, xxxxxxxx is using an unlicensed version of the following theme:

Your store will be taken offline on November 6, 2024 if this issue hasn’t been resolved. You can resolve this issue by:
Purchase: consider buying the theme from the theme developer using the link provided in the notice, or
Delete: if you choose not to purchase the theme, then you must remove it from your theme library.
If you require any assistance with buying the theme, please contact the theme developer directly at support@pixelunion.net. If you require any assistance removing the theme, please contact Shopify support.
If you delete the theme, reply directly to this email to let us know. If you purchase the theme, we require the theme developer to confirm.

They say 'It will keep code edits', but it's just not working. There is no such a thing 'keeping custom code' if you custom code your theme. Basically, this app is useless for me.

The Theme Updater does have a "Preserve theme file customizations" feature.
This feature will transfer over customizations from your older theme file to the updated theme file. This is all done in an unpublished theme file as not to disrupt anything on your storefront.
From there, you will get the opportunity to review your updated theme, and once you are happy with the updated theme file, you can publish it to your storefront.
It sounds like there may have been a step missed in the update process, and we have reached out to you so we can work with you on your theme update.

For those who read the response: This in every way incorrect.
Our custom code is not slowing down our theme. That is not the issue and our correspondance have been on the same ticket all alone, which has been replied by us continuously. The app has been of no use, please do not disregard your responsibility by making it seem the fault us on us.
Downloaded the app to carry over some customs codes (page speed improvements only). The updated theme version didn't even carry over our photos and contacted support.
After weeks of requesting updates, finally they reported the issue was fixed and all possible content was carried over.
What they did not mention (or may not have checked) was the fact that the updated theme was not functional, even the cart did not work and you could not place an order along with other major errors.
I was OK to waive the custom codes and just proceed with a standard carry over, but their solution was to hire Storetasker.
I am so disappointed and frustrated of having to wait weeks and finally be referred to a more expensive solution. I can't even proceed with the standard theme unless I hire Storetasker. In addition our Google Traffic is down by almost 50%!
As soon as possible we will migrate to a different theme by a different developer.
If I could I would give 0 starts!

The only thing it did for me is install an updated version of my current theme, which I've already done from the Shopify theme store. Everything else I have to do manually. Plus, there is no option to cancel your plan so I have to contact customer support just to cancel, which I find unnecessary.

We were able to help with the cancelation of your subscription on the same day that you started it, but did not know that you were needing assistance with updating the theme itself, as this was not mentioned in your ticket.
We would appreciate the chance to support you where we can, and hope that you will reply to our follow up in the open ticket.

Okay before I dive into my negative review, I know the developer will respond by giving me a generic reply however there is clear proof with over 90 1-star reviews how trash the support is for Out Of The Sandbox.
For starters, I am all for supporting people's business and I understand things cost money, keeping your website up to date costs money too however what doesn't sit right with me is how there is no support for anyone who has a custom code.
I decided to purchase the higher member tier for this app, thinking it was going to be a 1 click solution to update my out-of-date theme however, I ran into an issue where my theme couldn't be updated and I needed to contact customer support.
Basically, they looked into my theme and updated it however they had to copy my live theme and said that some code elements couldn't be transferred. Basically, my whole website was scrapped to nothing..
This was the email response I received:
"The error message here is expected and is related to Shopifys recent 'Section Group' changes which have affected the header and footer sections.
As a result, the mega menu would need to be rebuilt, but this will be a one-time inconvenience."
Pretty much Out Of The Sandbox doesn't give you any true help and tells you to outsource a freelancer to Storetasker which is the biggest money grab I have ever seen.
Look I am no expert but I am not a complete noob when it comes to technology and I know transferring a code isn't complicated.
I was charged $500 USD to transfer a few codes which is only less then an hour's work...That is the biggest scam I have ever heard. It costs more to transfer the code than the actual cost of the theme, and I know 100% that Out Of The Sandbox and Storetasker have some kind of agreement.
For anyone reading this, do yourself a favour and hire someone from Freelancer, it only cost me about $20 and the code was completed within an hour..

Shopify's move to Online Store 2.0 does add a few additional steps to the process in the initial update to 2.0, but the good news is that this is a 1-time update, and allows you to start fresh. This means you can do away with all the old code in your theme from old apps and customizations that can be slowing down your theme, and gives you the chance to move to Online Store 2.0 and take advantage of all the great features that have been introduced to your theme!

I installed this app and got an error message "Could not complete theme update due to error". I contacted support, who said "our apps team is looking into this." It's been 13 days now, still no update, and they stopped replying to my emails.
