WHAT IS THE COOKIE CONSENT LAW?

The EU Directive 2002/58/EC, which all member nations adopted, requires governments to set up laws for cookie consent. Non-essential cookies generally require informed consent from users with a few exceptions.

An example of an essential cookie would be one that ensures the safety of online banking. Anything other than essential cookies (aka all ad tracking cookies) is considered to be non-essential.

The law applies technically to all websites based in EU member states or targeting them. Due to the difficulties of enforcement, you probably don't have to care if you're outside the EU. You should take this law seriously if you're based in the EU. There have been some very real fines handed out as a result of the laws, even though they aren't frequent.

It's important to collect informed consent from your readers in order to stay on the right side of the law. How does informed consent work? It is important to inform store visitors about the use of cookies in a plain and jargon-free manner.

This includes:

• Why do you use cookies?
• The necessity of cookies
• What kind of cookies do you use?
• Who has access to the * cookie information, you or third parties
• The cookie will not be used for other purposes
• How users can withdraw their consent (the easiest way is leaving your site!)

Users are typically informed by a simple notification bar with consent buttons and a link to more information.
