Consider this paradox: the checkout funnel is the most important and complex area of every online store yet, it’s the area that gets the least amount of time and resources.

Ever since Amazon’s one-click checkout patent expired there is an explosion of accelerated payment options like PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and others, plus an increase in use of checkout related apps. A challenge is to make all these moving parts work well together.

The good news

Shopify is leading checkout funnel innovations. There is a lot of effort to test and optimize data entry and other UX elements and to move upstream accelerated payments with their ‘Dynamic Checkout’ button.

The not so good news

After working with a large number of merchants we know that checkout setup is far from perfect.

Our tests of content, style, the number of payment options, button locations, label, or color are revealing that a suboptimal checkout setup is costing merchants up to 15% in unrealized revenues.

The origin of Checkout Zen idea

In random small talk amongst our team there was mention of Credit Karma, a credit score service provider that helps banks and consumers with financing needs. This sparked an idea about using our data sets to introduce a ‘checkout score’; a single number that indicates if an online store is on a par with its competition.

What followed was the weeks of studying multi-merchant data sets in search of a method that will produce a consistent checkout score that reliably grades online stores of different size, different order value, or type of products sold.

The outcome was the adaptive checkout score that is continually learning and improving its accuracy, which is now subject of our US Patent Application.

Now merchants can easily learn how they compare to their competitors.

The checkout signals

But, why stop there? We expanded the applications to help merchants detect checkout distress signals with in-depth insights, segmentation and cross-data comparisons.

Actionable recommendations

The final step was to translate raw checkout performance data into valuable insights that human can actually understand and put to use.

That way merchants can continually grow the checkout revenue while learning from online shoppers reactions to ongoing optimization changes.
