Cost history on every receipt and every location — on units that break, expire or go missing.

One cost per item cannot hold a price that changes shipment to shipment, or a SKU that costs more in one warehouse than another. True COGS records what you paid on every receipt, folds freight, duty and currency into each unit, and recalculates weighted-average or FIFO cost per location. Nothing is overwritten: a variant's cost on any past date is exact, and year-end inventory value uses the costs you paid. Stock that breaks, expires or goes missing is priced at the cost it left at.

Finally see what a reorder really costs

Most of what I sell comes from overseas, and between supplier price changes and the duty increases this year my Shopify cost-per-item was never right, I'd only notice at month end when margins looked off. I set up True COGS mainly for the cost tracking, but the tariff page turned out to be the part I use most.

I tagged my products with their HS code and country, entered the duty rates I actually pay, and now it shows me what each product costs to reorder after duty and flags the ones that fell below my target margin. It caught two products I was basically selling at breakeven after the last rate change.

Enter what you paid when stock arrives and it updates the cost automatically, plus keeps a history for my accountant. Support answered fast when I had a setup question.

Thank you for taking the time to write this — it means a lot. You've described exactly why the tariff page exists: importers were flying blind on what a reorder actually costs once duty is in the mix, and month-end was too late to find out. I'm really glad it caught those two breakeven products for you before they cost you more.
If you ever run into a rate that behaves oddly or want something the tariff page doesn't do yet, email us anytime — feedback from merchants who actually import is what shapes what we build next. Thanks again for the thoughtful write-up.

I installed this expecting another cost field. What I got is a ledger — every price I pay written once and kept permanently. So March's margin still reads as March's margin when I look in September.

The freight and duty allocation alone was worth the price. HS code in, real rate out, landed in that receipt's unit cost. Replaced a spreadsheet I'd kept badly for two years.

What won me over: I refunded an order without restocking, and it showed me a worse margin, with a line explaining the stock was paid for, refunded and gone. Most tools would quietly delete the sale and flatter me.

It's honest about limits too — it won't invent an exchange rate for a foreign invoice, and says so.

Not for you if you sell consignment or one-of-a-kind stock; it assumes you own what you sell.

I've stopped keeping a parallel spreadsheet

TrueCogs has been a great addition to our store. The dashboard is easy to understand and gives clear insights into profitability and marketing performance. It helped us make better decisions with our ad spend and focus on what’s actually driving growth.

Thank you for this, and for being our first review.

True COGS keeps the cost record Shopify doesn't: what you actually paid for each item, written once and never rewritten, in a ledger you can hand an accountant and have them check for themselves.
