I switched from Mailchimp to Smartr because to save cost. I tried the trial version for a week and found that it had all the options I was used to on Mailchimp. The newsletter builder is not as neat and flexible but it does the job and you can compose fairly attractive emails using it. The automation options are quite thorough with lots of pre-designed templates/themes. The rest of the stuff is a bit simplistic but it covers all the basis for me. Smartr is a great choice for small businesses that want all the basic functionality without breaking the bank.
